Mary Jane's parents are John M and Emeline LYNCH Demorest.

On 29 Oct 1866 Mary Jane married John Nelson Caldwell in Vermilion County, Illinois. Mary and her new husband John moved on to Kansas. In Kansas, John and Mary raised three children. Two are believed to be biological. They are:

Eva Lena CALDWELL Moore 1874-1940
Mabel P CALDWELL Gloyd 1887-

The third child was John Presley Daniel Caldwell. John Presley was born to parents Abram Anderson Daniel and Carolyn Rosaline HEDGES Daniel, married on 16 Dec 1860 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Three children were born of the union of Abram and Carolyn Daniel, one daughter and two sons:

Effie Louisa Daniel
John Presley Daniel
Elza Morris "Elsie" Daniel

Both Abram and Rosaline died in Labette County, KS, in 1870, leaving three small children with no parents. Fortunately, each of their children were lovingly adopted by different families.

Daughter Effie Louisa was adopted by the J Benjamin and Rachel Cosatt family.

Son John Presley was adopted by the John Nelson and Mary Jane DEMOREST Caldwell. We carry on their name, and we are eternally grateful to them for making John one of their own.

Son Elza Morris was adopted by the Franklin J and Phoebe Abigail MARSHALL Hoag family.

Mary's husband, Private John Nelson Caldwell, was a Muster Roll Member of the Antietam Post No. 64 in Parsons, Labette, Kansas.

Both John and Mary are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons, Labette, Kansas. Many Thanks to the Kansas Historical Society. Without their record on John, we may never have known where John and Mary were buried. Unfortunately, the Oakwood Cemetery records are still on Index Cards.

It is unknown if John or Mary knew, or were possibly related to the Daniel family from Indiana. A large contingent of families moved from Indiana to Illinois, and then on to Kansas. It is entirely possible there were family connections adopting all three of the orphaned Daniel children.

Note: The 1900 Census reflects that Mary was Mother of 11, with 2 living children.
