Obituary
Berkeley K. (Buzz) Buzzell, 85, of Rutland, died Sunday, October 12, 2008, after a lengthy illness. He was born on April 14, 1923, in Colebrook, N.H., the son of Maurice G. and Opal (Keazer) Buzzell. He graduated from Pittsford High School, class of 1940. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran serving during WWII. He qualified for the Army Aviation Cadet Program and entered the service in September 1942. Upon completion of training at the Advanced Navigation School, he received his commission and rating as an aerial navigator. He flew overseas September 1942 and was assigned to the 8th Squadron 62nd Troop Carrier Group in Mediterranean Theater of Operations. He flew 58 single plane night combat missions over the Balkan countries and Northern Italy, para-dropping munitions, supplies and allied intelligence advisors to assist partisan resistance forces fighting in enemy-held territory. He participated in invasions of Greece and Southern France and he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, five air metals and the presidential distinguished unit citation badge. He also flew 650 hours evacuating the wounded from the front line aid stations and ferrying military personnel and supplies throughout North Africa and the Middle East. He returned to the states in February 1945.
He married Jane E. Elkey of Rutland on February 19, 1945, daughter of Edmund and Blanche (Oakman) Elkey. She accompanied him to San Marcos, Texas, where he was assigned as an aerial navigation flight instructor. He was discharged in July of 1945.
He later went to work at New England Telephone Co. from July 1946 and retired December 1984.
He was also a member of the American Legion Post 31 of Rutland and the Proctor Pittsford Country Club.
He is survived by his son, Kyle Buzzell of Pittsford; two daughters, Susan Buzzell of Rutland and Mrs. John Barron of New Hampshire; a brother, Philip Buzzell and his wife Lorraine (Heleba) Buzzell of Carlisle, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Linda (Cizmadia) Buzzell of Rutland, Vt.; a sister-in-law, Vince (Lionto) Buzzell of Proctor, Vt.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jane Buzzell, in January 21, 2005 (Cremated); a son, Jim Buzzell, in 1980; four brothers, Paul, Maurice, Gordon and Robert Buzzell, and a sister, Hazel.
A private joint graveside service for Mr. Buzzell and his wife, Jane, will be held in Evergreen Cemetery in Pittsford at the convenience of the family.
