Enlisted, April 9, 1917 in Company L, 10 NY Infantry Regiment, at White Plains, NY. Transferred to Company A, 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. After training at Camp Wadsworth, SC, the 105th Machine Gun Battalion deployed to Europe, May 18, 1918, aboard the USS Calomares.

After additional training in France, the 27th Division entered the lines in mid-July 1918. He saw combat in both Belgium & France. Returned to the States, March 6, 1919, aboard the USS Leviathan, docking Hoboken, NJ. Marched in the " Welcome Home Parade for the 27th Division ", March 25, 1919, up 5th Avenue, in New York City. Discharged as Mess Sergeant, April 1, 1919, Camp Upton, NY.
