The 1st NY Cavalry reorganized for the World War as the 104th & 106th Machine Gun Battalions, 27th Division. He was assigned to Company A, 104th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. Company A was transferred and designated Company D, 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. After training at Camp Wadsworth, SC, the 105th Machine Gun Battalion shipped out from Europe, May 17, 1918, aboard the USS Calomares, from Newport News, VA. Docking in St, Nazaire, France, May 30, 1918. He saw combat in both Belgium & France.
Returning to the States, March 6, 1919, aboard the USS Leviathan, docking at Hoboken, NJ. He marched in the great " Welcome Home Parade " for the 27th Division, up 5th Avenue, in New York City, March 25, 1919. Discharged from the service, April 1, 1919, at Camp Upton, NY.
