U.S. Veteran William James ‘Jim’ Monaghan passed away with his family at his side on Thursday evening June 3, 2010 at Bay Regional Medical Center, age 89. The son of the late James & Louise (Beaudin) Monaghan, he was born January 31, 1921 in Bay City. Jim graduated from St. James High School in 1938 and served with the US Navy during WWII. He retired from the Bay County Sheriff Department in 1983. Jim was a member of Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #18 and the AMVETS Post #22.

Mr. Monaghan is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Elaine Marie (Bassett); three daughters, Echo Mondeau of Saginaw, Dorothy Carvey-Tirmko and Nancy (Ron) Yurgaites, both of Bay City; grandchildren, Lisa Leisentritt and special friend Gary, Brent Yurgaites and special friend Sarah, and Scott Carvey; a great-grandchild, Alan Leisentritt; his sister, Lauramae Williams of Essexville; his brother, Robert Monaghan of Jackson, MI; a brother-in-law, Ed Burdis of Bay City; several nieces & nephews; and his dog, Noele. Besides his parents, Jim was also preceded in death by a sister, Clara Burdis.

A Memorial Liturgy will take place at 10:00am on Wednesday June 9, 2010 at Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church, 1104 State St. Officiating will be Rev. Fr. George J. Serour followed by Military Honors conducted by the Bay County Veterans Council. Private inurnment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2:00 to 8:00pm and at the church on Wednesday from 9:00am until time of service. A Vigil for the Deceased will take place at 7:00pm on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Visitation Catholic Church or the Humane Society of Bay County.
