John Wilbert "JW" Myers grew up on a farm at Ashland, Ohio. His formal schooling was limited to grammar school, but he had a good mathematic capabilities which served him well in the business field. His first business (in partnership with his brother David) was in operating a sawmill, which later burned to the ground. "JW", without David, started another sawmill. In time, JW's fortunes grew. He continued living in Ashland, and expanded into the construction business in Akron, Ohio, 50 miles away. He was a one-fourth owner in Carmichael Construction Company which was very successful and well established by 1914, when World War I began. "JW" had other business interests, including occasional real estate ventures. He was also a partner in the Wise Furnace Company which produced home heating furnaces. [notes from Stan Myers]
