Reverend Father Cesidio J. "Jack" Federico, of Weirton, WV, passed away at 5:45 PM on January 16, 2015 surrounded by family praying the Rosary, at the Weirton Medical Center, following an extended illness.

Father Jack was born in Follansbee, WV, on April 28, 1931, a son of the late Anthony and Philomena (D'Aurora) Federico Casarcia.

He attended Mahan Public School and St. Anthony Elementary School, graduating from Steubenville Central Catholic High School in 1949. In high school he was a member of the
football, baseball and track teams. Always very sports oriented, he was an avid handball player. He was employed by the Bazley Junedale Meats, Chicago, working in managerial positions in Ohio and western Pennsylvania until 1954.

Resigning that position, he enrolled in Loyola University taking specialized classes preparatory to entering Minor Seminary, St. Charles, Catonsville, MD. Two years later in 1956, he entered the School of Philosophy at St. Mary's University on Paca Street, in Baltimore.

He completed his college courses in 1958 and entered St. Mary's Theological Seminary, Roland Park, Baltimore. After four years of study at the seminary he was ordained on May 26, 1962 at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Wheeling, WV.

Following ordination, Father served as Associate Pastor at Corpus Christi Catholic Parish in Warwood, a part of Wheeling. Two years later he was reassigned to St. Paul's Catholic Parish in Weirton, where he was associate pastor to a congregation of some 900 families.

He was assigned to the first full pastorate in 1966, serving two churches, Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Sistersville and St. John Catholic Church in St. Mary's.

In 1969, the bishop called him to serve the people at the Blessed Trinity Catholic Church on Wheeling Island. He ministered to the people of the island parish for six years before being assigned to Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Huntington.

During his 13 years at the Huntington church, with the cooperation of the people, the grade school was enlarged, a 300 seat gymnasium constructed, and a parish hall social center, with a capacity for 350 people was completed.

While at Huntington, Father Federico served as Catholic chaplain to the Huntington State Hospital, chaplain to the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, and chaplain to the Catholic Daughters of America. He also served as dean of the Huntington Deanery. The church had a congregation of some 700 families, with a parish grade school kindergarten through eighth and St. Joseph's High School, which he served in an administrative capacity. He was also president of the school board for several years. He was at the Hunting church nearly 14 years.

Following a brief tenure at St. Michael Parish in Vienna, in June 1989, the Most Reverend Bernard W. Schmitt, D.D., called Father Federico to Clarksburg, WV to assume the duties of Pastor at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he remained until a serious illness forced him to retire in December 2007. Upon recovering from his illness, Father Federico continued to celebrate the Sacraments at St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Weirton.

Along with his pastoral duties at Immaculate Conception Church, Father Federico served as State Chaplain to the Catholic Daughters of the Americas; he was a member of the Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus, the Clarksburg Columbian Club, the Y.M.C.A., the Theta Chi Alpha Fraternity, Beta Chapter of Follansbee, WV, the Catholic Golden Age Club (C.G.A.), the International Walt Disney Mickey Mouse Club and the A.A.R.P.

Father Federico noted that pastoral duties were virtually the same in all parishes, providing for spiritual growth and administering the sacraments to the Catholic community. In addition to handball, Father Jack enjoyed music, reading, boating, fishing, and traveling. He made one trip to Italy several years ago, and would have traveled abroad more, if circumstances had permitted.

In his retirement years, Father Federico enjoyed serving and praying for others as he attended an assisted on funerals of his neighbors and friends at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Follansbee, WV.

In addition to his parents, Father Federico was preceded in death by his stepfather, Guy R. Casarcia and his dog, Rocky Marsciano II.
