Betty Lou Lance was the last child born to Virginia née Clore and James S. Lance, growing up in Oregon before her family relocated to the San Diego area of Southern California. She attended and graduated from Sweetwater High School in National City, San Diego County, California. She next attended San Diego State College, and was a member of Delta Sigma Phi sorority. She was joined in marriage to U.S. Army Captain Donald B. George on June 26, 1953 in San Diego. Together they had three children. They lived in Germany and many other places during his military career (which included the post WW2 occupation forces in Germany, and multiple tours in Korea and Vietnam), last living in Claremont, a suburban city on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County, California. They divorced on January 31, 1979. She later remarried to R. Noel Stone, on December 4, 1979 in Carson City, Nevada. They then moved to Oroville, California making their ranch on the top of Table Mountain. Years later they relocated to Coquille, Oregon where they bought a beautiful large Victorian home, which they restored and sold. They then moved to Payson, Arizona where Noel fell ill, and passed away.
