Entered Officer's Training Camp, May 13, 1917, Ft Snelling, MN, from Nebraska. Assigned, Aug. 20, 1918, as 2nd Lieutenant, to Company D, 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. He saw combat in both Belgium & France. Wounded in action ( gassed ) , Sept. 2, 1918, at Vierstraat Ridge, Belgium.

Awarded the Silver Star, order # S.O. 39, 27th Division, for action at the Battle of Le Selle River, Oct. 17, 1918, France. Discharged from service, April 1, 1919, Camp Upton, NY.
