Mittens came into the world when someone dumped a pregnant mother at the school where I worked. Of course I fed her and looked after her as her time came. There was much excitement down in the back shed when five little kittens were born. Mittens was one of two ginger kittens and because he was born a couple of hours after the rest was smaller than the rest.My heart burst when I saw mittens being born and spent many an hour with them curled up. The mum really did look after them. I think he was a Burmese cat but who cares. The box was nice warm and safe.Instead of working I would check on them every day and they grew bigger. What to do with five kittens and a stray mum but by Christmas I had found homes for all and the mum went home with one of her kittens.
The first time mittens and his brothers and sister ventured out in the world was in the music room. They ran and followed each other until the mum grabbed one (the naughty black one) by the neck and took him back to the box. a subtle hint to me to take them back. every afternoon I would put them in the music room to watch them chop each other and play togeather.
I fed them kitten food and they grew quickly. I fed mittens separately from his mum the last day and she ate with him and licked him goodbye. she knew that I was going to give him a good home. Mittens sat on my knee as I drove him to his new home. If ever a cat has hit the jackpot it was him.
Mittens had to meet Kimba and miggies our other two cats.Kimba loved him from the start but miggies hissed and hid for the first week or so. what a wimp!
mittens was named from Peter rabbit stories. The whole family loved mittens. He was so loved by his big brother Kimba who took the young prince under his wing and showed him where to sleep and what to eat. Two of mittens favourite pastimes.
During the summer it would be very hot but not for Mittens who would be curled up in a tight ball under the quilt on my daughters bed!
The three beautiful boys which we called Mittens Kimba and Miggy would come from their sleeping places right on 4.30 with there tales straight in the air. They would eat togeather and have a wash and then with their eyes hardly open go back to their beds or back of our lounge and stretch out for a few more hours. The back of our lounge has a permanent bulge from the weight of the three beautiful boys.
To our son Edmund, Mitts was a friend and a constant source of joy. Mitts would spend hours on his bed or on his computer chair. Edmund took a lot of videos and photos of his pet. He had that special bond with this ginger prince. He called him the "DOOZEY DEE"
To our oldest son Marc Mittens would jump on his knee and settle down for precious moments. Mits did the rounds of beds and laps book shelves chairs and other hiding places.
To our daughter Scarlett mittens was a big part of her healing and source of unconditional love. Only a week or so ago He came in soaked and made his way to stretch out next to her with his head on the pillow to warm up and dry off.
To my wife Mittens was a companion through the day a friend to sit next to and a sounding board. His eyes followed you around the room and we joked that mittens needed spectacles for his crossed eyes.
" Mit mits mummy loves you darling" was heard every day.
I made up silly songs and sang them when I was happy. One of them was "The little doozey the little doozey, doozy doozy doozy doozy DEE!
In the morning of February 24th I got into my car at 500am to go to work and turning to the main road I saw his lifeless body on the side of the road.
I gathered him up in my arms and got him in the car all I remember saying was my precious darling boy my darling my mittens. The whole family cried and wept for mittens.
He made one mistake to cross that road and was hit and killed instantly. his blood is still on my work shirt after numerous washes and we had a family funeral. If you lose something that is such a big part of your life there is an unfillable gap that will take ages to heal. To the swine who killed you may you crash your car wake up trapped and fires slowly consume your flesh in agony. I curse you.
The kids are quiet. I cry. I miss and loved Mittens. We only had you for three years four months and nine days or 1228 days. Each one you lived as a prince and gave us back so many good memories and unconditional love.
