As a young man he helped with the chores on the farm and eventually moved to Lansing. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1945 serving aboard the USS Enterprise CV-6. He served in the Navy throughout the Korean War. Upon his return to Lansing, he began work as a carpenter, a career that would last over 60 years. He became a building contractor in the early 1970's and owned Landon Builders. He built hundreds of houses throughout mid-Michigan.
Phillip became a follower of Jesus Christ in the mid-50's and will be remembered by his friends and family as a tower of faith and unyielding devotion to his Lord and Savior. He was a kind and gentle man who showed Christ's love to all he came in contact with.
Phillip loved flying and became a pilot in the late 1960's. He also loved playing his guitar and his family has fond memories of family devotions that included gospel guitar music.
Phillip never gave up his love of carpentry and used his gifts to make many beautiful pieces for friends, family and the church.
Phillip was preceded in death by his loving wife, Phyllis, sons Phillip Jr., John Phillip, his parents Norman and Merle Landon, and his sister Majorie.
He leaves to cherish his memory a brother, Dr. John Landon; a sister, Ruth Green; three sons, Steve (Diane) Landon, Jim (Kathi) Landon, Ray (Debbie) Landon; daughter Joyce Hernandez; daughter-in-law Judy Landon; 17 grandchildren Steve (Roxy) Landon, Mike Landon, Bobbie (Randy) Mock, Stacie (Chad) Gerlock, Tina (Dan) Reimer, Kari (Marc) Oberdank, John Jr. (Julia) Landon, Joshua (Priscilla) Landon, Sara Roman Landon, Laura (Alan) Blazek, Quarine (Ryan) Ruperd, Ken (Misty) Beaty, Nathan Beaty, Kasonya (Shawn) Parsons, Stephanie Hanson, Samantha Hanson, Severo Hernandez; and 21 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Thursday, March 12, 2015 in the Garden Chapel at Mt. Hope Church, Lansing, with Pastor Ross McAllroy officiating.
