Cleveland Player Dies
Pitcher McDonald Succumbs to Rheumatism
Jack McDonald, well known among his friends as Irish, died at his home, 8819 Payne Ave. at 1:35, Fri. morning, from inflammatory rheumatism. Jack was 30 years old.
McDonald, broad-shouldered and rugged, played ball in and near Cleveland for many years. He was a good pitcher but because of his good hitting, when not used in the box, he worked in the outfield. Irish got his start with the Only Nine, of which Frank and Billy Delahanty, were members. He also played with the famous Bachrs. Attracting the eyes of the scouts, McDonald signed to pitch for the Montgomery team of the southern League. Among his opponents while at Montgomery, were the Naps, who played in Montgomery on their training trip. McDonald also played with Lynn of the New England League where he pitched some good ball. Retiring from the diamond a few years ago, McDonald became an umpire working many, many games hereabouts.
McDonald caught cold a few weeks ago and thinking he could throw it off he did not take the best care of himself. Rheumatism set in and went to his heart, bringing his death.
Other occupation: Machinist
John was not married.
