Obituary

The subject of this sketch, William Alonzo Dunkerson, was born May 11, 1851, in Harrison county, Mo., where he spent his entire life with the exception of a few years in Clay county. Hew was the second son of Leander and June Dunkerson. He was deprived early in life of his parents' love and guidance, his father dying when he was about eleven years of age and his mother when he was seventeen. Two brothers, Paschal and George, also preceded him to the spirit world. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Artie Morris, of Paola, Kas., who is unable to be present today on account of poor health, and one brother, John C. Dunkerson, of Kansas City, who is also absent.
On Nov. 11, 1875, he was married to Nancy Elizabeth Roach, who remains to mourn her loss. This union was blessed with six children, all of whom were with him when the end came. 'the children are: Mrs. Cash Bensyl, Laura, Willard, Mrs. Scott Moore, Blanche and Mrs. 'Doc' Jones. He also leaves five grandchildren, two having died in infancy.
He and his faithful wife obeyed the gospel in March, 1895, under the preaching of Alfred Ellmore and thus have lived Christian life together for 25 years. Not only all the children are members of the church but their companions and the grandchildren are following in his steps.
Sixteen years ago he suffered a slight stroke of paralysis, which he did not recognize as such at the time. A second stroke came upon him Dec. 29, 1878, from which he never entirely recovered, although he never ceased trying to perform the many duties to which he had always been accustomed. The third and last stroke overtook him just after he had finished his chores at dark, on May 4, 1920, from which he never regained consciousness. He lived exactly twenty-four hours, passing to rest about 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 5, 1920, lacking only six days of being 69 years old.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at the Zion church by Bro. W. A. Sevedge, of Davis City, Ia., after which interment took place in a beautiful spot in the Allen cemetery, the last earthly resting place of many of his relatives and friends. A large crowd was present to pay their last respects to their life-long neighbor and kinsman, and to extend sympathy to the bereaved.
Bro. Dunkerson was a man of honor, striving to be obedient to his Lord and just to his fellowman, a kind husband and father. He was not given to harsh words, blame or complaining. He was industrious far beyond his strength, and bore his afflictions so patiently that those about him could never know how much he suffered. Let us imitate the good in his life.
