Robert was a veteran of WWII, and enlisted in the US Army on 18 February 1943. He received a Purple Heart for his service. As an architect, and artist, he was a member of the Society of Landscape Painters 1957-1962 and was Art Director for the Sperry Rand Corporation.
He married the former Mrs. Frances Alice Boatwright Grattano on 31 December 1958 in Arlington, Virginia. They had one son, Vance Peter.
