Daughter of Ida and George. Multiple spellings of Bertha's maiden name have been found, so far I've yet to confirm which spelling was used. Probable spellings include File, Pfeil, Pfiel and Phile.

Bertha was married to John Ritthamel on August 22, 1897 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The family is found in the 1900 Census living in West Town (historical Polish neighborhood) Chicago. John and Bertha's daughter is listed as Ida. By the 1910 Census John reports being divorced and he is living with his parents and his children, Edna and John.

Bertha then married Ben F. Littlejohn on October 25, 1904 in Chicago, Illinois. They went on to have at least five daughters, Alvina, Velda, Estelle, Lucille and Elois.

Bertha finished the fifth grade and worked in factories and as a clerk. She fought cervical cancer, which is, according to her death certificate, what eventually claimed her life at Casa Reposa Nursing Home in Chicago.

While born in New York, Bertha also lived in Missouri, Montana, Illinois and possibly Wisconsin.
