The Rev. Elmer Randolph Shell, 78, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Holy Cross Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
He was born to the parentage of Chester and Marie Shell on August 31, 1919 in Hawthorne. He was the eldest of three children. His sister, Margery Shell Johnson and brother, Arthur R. Shell Sr. preceded him in death. At an early age he accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He grew up and was a member of Galilee Baptist Church, Hawthorne. He attended and completed his elementary and secondary education in the public schools of Alachua County. He graduated from Shell High School of Hawthorne. He furthered his academic pursuits at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Tallahassee, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. After earning his Bachelor of Science Degree, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served his country during World War II. Upon his return to civilian life, he continued his post-graduate training and attained a Master's Degree. He studied at St. Augustine College, Raleigh, N.C. and Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. As he began his career, he served as a teacher at RJE High School in Starke and on the Florida Memorial College. He relocated to Ft. Lauderdale and furthered his career as an educator at Dillard High School. In 1970, he transferred to Rogers Middle School from which he retired in June 1994. He joined the membership of First Baptist Church at Piney Grove, Ft. Lauderdale. There he was ordained as a Minister and served faithfully as an associate pastor until his demise.
He married the former Gladys Selmore Floyd, October 18, 1969. They lived a happy life until he was called to his eternal home. He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving wife, Gladys Shell; daughter, Velia Elma shell of Gainesville; grandson, Kyle Shell Sr.; a great-grandson, Kyle Shell Jr. of Gainesville; step-children, Victoria Floyd of Lauderdale Lakes and William D. Battle II of Albany, Ga.; nieces, Cheryl J. Purdy (Henry) of St. Petersburg, Joyce Robinson (Daniel) of Gainesville and Carol A. Cue (Raymond) of Hawthorne; nephews Arthur R. Shell Jr. (Gloria) of Gainesville, Linzel Shell (Rosalind) of Orlando, Larry Lewis of Gainesville and Gary Lewis of Orlando; brothers-in-law, Damon Selmore (Otelia), Simon Selmore and Waymon Selmore; sisters-in-law, Daisy Selmore, Vera Washington and Verlee Shell; two god-sisters; several grand nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, Hawthorne with Pastor Rev. Marrion S. Drye and Rev. Carnell C. Henderson conducting the services. Burial will be in Hawthorne Cemetery in Hawthorne.
