The Death notice for their missing child has been found............

DIED
GARDNER--In Franktown, Colorado, November 28, Clara, infant daughter of J.F. and Helen Gardner, aged 3 weeks and 2 days
"Dearest Clare, thou hast left us
Here thy loss we deeply feel
But 'tis God that has bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal."
(Poem by Mark Twain)
We NOTICE that the DIED notice spells her name both ways, CLARE and CLARA, and remember her mother's sister Clara Kelly had died in child birth just 2 years earlier.
There is 1 Unknown broken up headstone located between James Gardner and his wife Helen J. Knox-Gardner. It is also listed on the 1970/2000 map as "Unknown"
Helen Knox-Gardner

We have 4 good reasons to believe this is where the "6th child" of Helen's and J.F.'s was laid to rest.
#1 the "DIED" notice 1872
#2 the broken headstone between Helen and Frank Gardner
#3 the name they chose for their daughter born November 5 1872, just 2 years after Helen's sister, CLARA Kelly died

The GRACE listed on the 1870/80 census age:1/11 1870 only child. 1880 Grace/Lillian/Fred L./Lacie just 4 kids.
1885 state census they list a Daisy L. age:16, same age as Grace is. But Grace is not listed and she did not get married until 1889. Conclusion: Grace/Daisy L. are aka.

So the data found, noted above, I believe proves this is their child, a Gardner.
