Walter, the son of Reversa Ward, dear brother of William Ward of Harvey Illinois and the son of Walter L. Ward enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 16 1965 in Chicago. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of June the 1st Battalion Command Post was located at the Khe Sanh Combat Base in northern Quang Tri Province and all subordinate units of the Battalion conducted combat operation in their assigned sectors.

On June 7, a Company B patrol in the vicinity of Hill 881 some 2 kilometers south of the strong point on Hill 881 South came under a heavy small arms and mortar attack from the NVA. The enemy assaulted the Marines but were repulsed but as a medical evacuation helicopter arrived to extract the wounded in came under enemy fire. Additional Marine reinforcements were dispatched to the area to engage the enemy. Eighteen men were killed in the action and many more were wounded, Cpl Walter Ward was one of the casualties, he was killed in the action by fragmentation wounds from a hostile grenade.
