Colleen Elva (Christensen) Ashworth - Mother, Aunt, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother; and the last of the Ashworth Aunts and Uncles that were part of a large, loving family in Las Vegas.

Colleen was born October 7, 1926 in Moroni, Utah, to parents Kenneth and Elva (Blackham) Christensen. The Christensen family moved to McGill, Nevada in 1941, where Kenneth worked for Kennecott Copper. Colleen graduated from White Pine High School in 1944, where she met Lloyd Keith Ashworth, of Kimberly, NV. After graduation, her family moved back to Salt Lake City, where she worked in a bank and a drug store. Keith had joined the US Air Force and was in pilot training.

Following Keith’s graduation from pilot training, Keith and Colleen were married April 21, 1945 in San Antonio, Texas. After his discharge from the Air Force, they returned to Kimberly where they lived briefly until Keith entered University of Utah to study accounting.

While living in Salt Lake City, their first son, Glen Alan, was born on November 3, 1946. The family moved to Las Vegas in March of 1947, where Keith entered the accounting business with his brother Don. Colleen enjoyed being a stay-at-home Mom and housewife. Their second son, Kenneth Earl Ashworth was born October 11, 1950 in Las Vegas. Brian Keith Ashworth came along eleven years later, on July 11, 1961.

Through the years, Colleen was involved in the community in a number of ways. She belonged to Beta Sigma Phi sorority; she was a member of the Mesquite Club, and a volunteer at the Home of the Good Shepherd. For five years she worked as a volunteer in out-patient surgery at Valley hospital.
But more importantly, she was the unsung hero of the family’s success. The statement “Behind every successful man there stands a woman” was never more true than with Keith and Colleen.

Keith was involved in the Nevada Legislature for 17 years, followed by an important position with Nevada Power Company. He was frequently away from home, leaving the domestic duties to Colleen… raising three boys and keeping the home running smoothly. Keith had most of the limelight in their social and political circles, with his great sense of humor and wonderful stories. But Colleen was the silent partner… the force behind the man… that ‘somebody’ behind the scene who kept it all together. And she was happy to do it – without any accolades. She was a fabulous hostess, kept a meticulous home, and was always dressed to the nines for their many public engagements. As her son, Glen, said “Dad was incredible because Mom was… She made it all work for him.”

Colleen also had a life-long love of her little dogs. Her boys – all avid hunters – had big dogs to do their manly stuff. But there wasn’t a time when Colleen didn’t have her own cute little dog that she spoiled rotten… There was Suzette, the Poodle; Muffet the Yorkie; and Brianna, the Maltese, to name just a few. When she and Keith moved into their new home at Painted Desert, the back yard was still dirt, and her little dog wouldn’t whiz in the dirt. So Colleen sent Keith to the nursery to buy enough sod to make a 4 by 4-foot patch of lawn for the little dumpling to whiz on…and a sprinkler to keep the grass alive.

On October 15, 2015, at age 89, Colleen was called home. She leaves behind her last little dog, Cody, a Papillon, who will miss her deeply, as we all will. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Lloyd Keith Ashworth; and her parents. Colleen is survived by her three sons, Glen (Karina) Ashworth, Ken (Cindy) Ashworth and Brian (Silvania) Ashworth; six grandchildren, Megan, Leandra, Matthew, Justin, Cassidy and Giacomo; and one great-grandchild, Evan.

Visitation will be 1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015 with services following, both at Palm Downtown Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St., Las Vegas.
