Morton was born Oct 15, 1925 in Detroit Michigan. Morton is the 3rd child and 2nd son of Israel (Tom) and Celia (Slobin) Brown. He had a older brother, Alvin born in 1922. (Alvin was a twin. Baby Girl Brown was stillborn.) Morton's parents immigrated from Kiev, Ukraine at the early part of the 20th century.
Morton's original middle name listed on his birth certificate was Nathaniel. It was never told to him why it was change to Seymour when he was 3 days old. Mort spent the first 11 years of his life in Detroit. He remembers that for two weeks every year he and his brother would spend time at a family friend's farm out side of Detroit. His mom wanted them to get out of the dirty city congestion to get fresh air and have fun to run around and be boys. One morning when Mort was about 8 yrs old his mother told him and his brother that their dad had passed away the previous night due to complications of an accident he has been involved in a year earlier. Although Mort said he never observed any lingering problems from the accident, he had learned never to question his mother. His dad was never talked about again. (Years later, when Mort was going through his mother's things after her death in 1985 he came crossed divorce papers between Tom and Celia. It was something that was thought might have actually occurred, but not confirmed until that day.) When Mort was 11 yrs old, He, along with his mom and brother moved from Detroit to Calif. They shared a ride and expenses with a couple college students heading west. Mort remembered staying at a hotel a couple nights, But mostly just sleeping in the car when they would stop for the night. They ended up in Los Angeles California. Celia got a job working at a local grocery/general store. The three lived in the apartment above the store. A couple years later she was able to buy the store. After Mort graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1944 during WWII he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served his time in the Army stationed at Ft Bliss in El Paso Texas as a gunnery instructor. He was injured when he pushed a fellow soldier out of the way of the spinning barrel of a tank. The barrel hit him on the shoulder/back. Although not seriously injured at the time, the accident would weaken his back and effect him in the years ahead causing his back to curve as he aged. Mort was discharged from the Army at the end of the war. At the time of his discharge he had papers assigning him to report to the Pacific Theater, (Japan.) He was scheduled to leave in two weeks. After the war Mort came back to Los Angeles and got a job as an assistant manager of the local movie theater for a couple years. Mort always enjoyed movies and enjoyed his time at the theater. He would tell of the times when he was a child and would get the special treat of going to a movie. A couple times when money was not available he and his friends would walk into the theater backwards as people were exiting the theater. They would sit high in the balcony out of sight. His next job was in the stock room at the department store Bullocks. This job would change his life. Because it was where he would meet the most important person in his life. His wife Lois. (Mort always said his life began the day he met her.) Mort and Lois dated for a couple years before they married. Over the next 6 years they had 5 daughters. (Jef-1955, Kyle-1957, Lori-1958, Kris-1959, Traci-1960). In 1967 their 6th and youngest daughter Kelli was born. Over the years the family moved a number of times with in Los Angeles County. Finally in 1996 Mort and Lois moved to Minden, Nevada near their daughter Traci. They greatly enjoyed the more open spaces and nature around them. Out there window they could see the Sierra Nevadas, which they both greatly enjoyed. (Mort even enjoyed the snow now that he could afford proper shoes to keep his feet dry. Compared to the stories he would tell about having to stick cardboard in his shoes to cover up holes when he lived in Detroit as a child.) It was where he would live out his life.
Mort was a fairly shy person. Being around his family was what he cherished most. He had various hobbies and enjoyments. He loved music. He enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley and the Statler Brothers. He even enjoyed listening to quirky songs. Such as Tie me kangaroo down sport, Beans in my ears, and Drop kick me Jesus through the goal post of life. Two of his favorite songs were My cup runneth over by Edd Ames in honor of his wife Lois. And 18 yellow roses by Bobby Darrin in honor of his daughters. Mort also loved to grow cactus. He learned to be very precise on which cactus would grow best in in garden. And how to care for them properly with the right amount of soil and plant mix. While living in California his yard was a maze of cactus and Lois's roses. Which made a beautiful sight when all were in bloom. When they moved to Northern Nevada it was a bit more of a challenge to keep the cactus growing. Most of the cactus were mobile so they could spend the winter indoors. Mort was a reader. A self taught very wise man through the many books he would read. History about people, places and events.
Although Mort and Lois had 6 daughters he felt he also had 4 sons in the relationship of 4 son in laws whom he loved as if they were his own sons.
Although Mort and Alvin lost touch over the years when they reached adulthood, Mort felt a deep sadness and loss when Alvin died Oct. 1961 at age 39 years old of esophageal cancer. He would share many stories with his family about the many adventures and games he and Alvin played as children. Mort always commented how handsome and smart Alvin was. A picture of he and Alvin as children would sit on a table next to his favorite chair. When Mort was seen looking over at the picture it was imagined he was reliving those times and games with his brother.
Mort and Lois experienced tragedy over the years with the death of 3 of their daughters. Kris, their 4th daughter died in Nov. 1959 at the age of a few weeks from Cystic Fibrosis. (At the time of Kris' death her illness had no name.) Their 6th daughter Kelli also passed away from Cystic Fibrosis in 1993 at the age of 25 yrs. 2013 their oldest daughter Jef passed away from cancer at the age of 57yrs.
Mort passed away quickly on the night of Nov. 8th ,2015 at home. He did not suffer. The way he would have wanted. Mom said it was his last gift to her. He would not want her to see him suffer. She was glad he did go quickly and therefore did not suffer.
Mort was always a great listener and also a great advice giver to his daughters. They were always coming to him for advice or a comforting word. He had many sayings or statements he would tell his children. Two of his favorites were "Listen to Momma" said every morning before he left for work. And "Put your brain in gear before you put your mouth in motion."
When Mort was 2 yrs old he had his tonsils removed. He developed an infection and fever soon after the surgery. His parents were informed he had died due to the infection and fever. He was placed in the hospital morgue as his parents arranged for his burial. Due to his small size he was wrapped in a sheet and placed on a cold marble slab instead of one of the freezer drawers. A few hrs later a Detroit police officer went into the morgue to check on a homicide victim and saw the sheet wrapped around Mort moving. It was decided that the coldness of the room and marble slab had caused Mort's fever to break. God gave him another 88 yrs to live his life.

Dad, to quote a much beloved holiday movie, " It was a Wonderful Life."

Mort is survived by his wife Lois, 3 daughters, ( and son in laws.), 13 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. ( 10 of those great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren born after his passing.)

years."-
