In June of 1943 he joined the Marine Corps and served in the Pacific aboard the battleship USS North Carolina where he became an anti-aircraft gunner and was credited with shooting down an attacking Kamikazi airplane before it could hit the ship.
He was married in Long Beach and in 1951 they moved to Lakewood, where they resided for the rest of their lives. Richard worked 35 years for Procter & Gamble in Long Beach. Bette preceded him in death in 2010.
He died peacefully in his sleep August 11th of natural causes.
