James N. Marsh
I was born in Smithfield Madison County in the state of New York January 16 No. 1822. I had the privilege of going to school for fifteen months or five three month terms. My education is limited. My parents were poor but my blessed mother done all she could for me. Our family was large and I was the youngest and when I was nine years of age I went away from home to try to earn my own living. I worked on farms at various places until I was fifteen years old then I went to Verona in Oneida County New York to learn the carpenter trade and at eighteen years of age I became a foreman and laid out frames for my employer. At age of twenty two I went from Oneida County to Genesee County New York in the year 1845. I was married to Ruth Vickory and we lived together for about twelve years. She left me with four little boys. I got a divorce from her and in the year 1862 I was living in Chautauqua (a indian reservation) and I married Susan C Littlebrandt. We resided there until the fall of 1865 when we came to Hart, Oceana County, Michigan, and at this writing we have lived here over 20 years. I have gained many true friends here and what is far better I have gained a hope of eternal happiness in heaven. I feel now that I will be called home from here. I am over 66 years old now . I have a hope of soon being forever with my dear crucified savior whose blood was spilled for me and I have a dear mother there a light in the window for me. I have many dear friends there but my dear birth mother was the best. I feel that I shall be with her at home with Jesus. Shelby, January 27 1888 James N. Marsh
