Composer. One of the most influential German songwriters of the pre-World War II era. He wrote numerous hit songs ("Ein Freund, ein guter Freund", "Das gibt's nur einmal, das kommt nicht wieder", "Das ist die Liebe der Matrosen", "Irgendwo auf der Welt", etc.), mostly with lyrics by Robert Gilbert. After the rise of the Nazis he emigrated to Hollywood and wrote music for several films by director Ernst Lubitsch, including "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife" (1938), "Ninotchka" (1939), and "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940). Heymann received Oscar nominations for "One Million B.C." (1940), "That Uncertain Feeling" (1941), "To Be or Not to Be" (1942), and "Knickerbocker Holiday" (with Kurt Weill, 1944).
