Daughter of Aaron Eliot & Gloriana Austin Eliot, niece of Moses Austin who planned the first American settlement of Texas but died in 1821, before could bring about its establish-ment. It was his son, Stephen Austin, who is known as the Father of Texas.

Known for her gentle ways, Anna Marie oversaw the development of the large, lovely garden of which her husband was so fond. At his death, much of its plant stock was placed in the garden of Henry Shaw, now the Missouri Botanical Gardens.
