In the Rockland Cemetery in Belpre, Ohio, there is a stone with this inscription on it: "Joseph W. Browning and Edward Payson [Browning], sons of William R. and Sophia A Browning. The former died at Union Theological Seminary, in the city of New York, 9 April 1847, age 26 years 6 mos, where his mortal remains are entombed. The latter died March 29, 1834 age 21 months." A letter of inquiry written by Elizabeth T. Wight to the Union Theological Seminary in 1991 elicited this answer: "There was only one form in the file and I've enclosed a copy of that. 'New York, January 25, 1876. Respecting Joseph Whiting Browning of the class of 1848, of Belpre, Ohio, born in Belpre, O. Oct. 8, 1820, Cong'ist church member, Belpre, A.B. Marietta College, was at Lane Sem. Cin. O. one year '45-6.'" Another source of information is his long obituary in the Marietta (Ohio) "Intelligencer", 22 April 1847.
