Lewis Alvin Burton was most likely the last child born to Amanda and John Burton III. His older siblings were Joseph James , Macy (or Maca), Arrilla, and Jennie Jane Iola; there were also two other siblings. It is unknown how much schooling Lewis had, but he could read and write.

Lewis married Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Eads (b. June 1869, KY) on April 6, 1896 in Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky. They had at least two children Albert O'Bannion (b. April 1897, KY) and Anonetta (b. August 1898, KY). Lewis supported the family by working in farming.

In the 1900 Census we find Lewis living in Lewis County, Kentucky with his wife and their two children; also living in the home is his sister in law, Betty's older sister, Mahala. In 1910 the family is recorded in Burtonville and Betty is working as a washwoman and the children are attending school.

In the 1930 Census Lewis reports that he is married, however he is living in Fleming County, Kentucky with his sister Jennie. Betty reported being divorced and she and the (now adult) children were living in Manchester, Ohio. Nettie married a man with the last name of Alten and had two children, Ethel (b. about 1920, OH) and Robert (b. about 1923, OH); however she was divorced by 1930. Nettie and Albert both supported the family, Nettie by quilting and Albert by working as a mechanic at a baking company.
