Alfred J. Rashid II, age 72, died peacefully at his home in Minnetonka, Minnesota, early Sunday morning, on April 3, 2016, after a valiant seventeen-month battle against cancer.

He is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Catherine (Danico), daughters Aimee Yanik (Mark) and Alisa Butler (Chris), son Alfred J. III (A.J.), grandchildren Jasmine and Adam Yanik, and sisters Mary McKinney (John) and Sandra Larsh. Of Lebanese and Irish heritage.

Al was born to Angela and Alfred J. Rashid on October 7, 1943 in Davenport, Iowa and attended St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Grade School 1950-1958. A 1962 graduate of Assumption High School, Davenport, Al was a three sport letter winner in football, track and baseball. He later earned a BA degree in political science at the College of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota (now, the University of St. Thomas).

In 1966, he joined the armed forces, serving as an instructor with the United States Army Medical Corps at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He was then assigned to a South Vietnamese Intelligence Unit base in Rach Kien, Mekong Delta, where he was wounded.

Upon his discharge from the military in 1969, Al and his young family settled in the Twin Cities. He continued to be active with his alma mater throughout his lifetime. From 1970 to 1975 Al was associated with Bankers Life of Nebraska, where he was Agency Man of the Year for four consecutive years. Beginning in 1975, Al served as a financial advisor with Strommen & Associates, a local financial planning firm. Strommen & Associates evolved into Swenson Anderson & Associates and today operates as AdvisorNet Financial (a Cetera Investment Services LLC affiliate). In 2014, as Al prepared for retirement, he partnered with Tufford-Hughes & Associates, an Edina Minnesota based financial planning firm affiliated with Cetera Investment Services. He was a life-time member of the University of St. Thomas President's Council, 1977-78, President of the Alumni Association, and served as chairman of the university's annual giving campaign.

An avid golfer, Al was also a lover of spectator sports, especially his adopted University of Minnesota Golden Gophers and his St. Thomas Tommies. His angler's enthusiasm for rod and reel were more than fair weather, but less than fanatical. As a member of the Basilica of St. Mary, Minneapolis, philanthropic endeavors were something near to Al's heart. Two groups where he lent his time in recent years were Basilica's Meals on Wheels and the BestPrep teaching program. Al spent more than forty fulfilling years in the areas of personal and corporate financial planning. He earned his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation in 1988, was President and Owner of Alfred Rashid CFP & Associates and was a member of the Financial Planning Association of Minnesota (FPA) since 1984.

A genuine and gregarious man, Al's spirit was always reflected in his optimistic attitude. The friendships he made were cherished as if extensions of his own family. He understood the fragility of life and the true meaning of what it meant to be a Christian.
