January 1881 - Mercury, the largest copper statue in the United States, is unveiled and hoisted 182 ft. above street level. Here, high above the fortress-like tobacco plant, surrounded by the Genesee, the Carroll-Fitzhugh mill race and the old Erie Canal,
Mercury would dominate the Roch. skyline for years to come.
First of all the relevance of the Statue to our family is that great-grandpa John Vogel, Lulu's dad and his brother Charles worked on the statue while employed in Rochester by the John Siddons Co.
