On October 8, while on a search for an T-28D Vietnamese fighter aircraft piloted by an American with a Vietnamese Observer two helicopters from HMM-361 crashed. The crash occurred in the rugged mountainous area of Quang Nam Province some 33 kilometers southwest of Thuong Duc.
There were no survivors, debris of one of the helicopters was spread along both banks of the Song Boung river, and wreckage of the other aircraft some 1600 meters away in the heavy jungle. It was reported that both helicopters may have crashed after a mid-air collision due to distraction from enemy ground fire. Nine Marines, two US Navy Corpsmen, and a US Navy Doctor perished in the crash, one of the casualties was LCpl Davidson.
