Enlisted, May 17, 1917, in Troop A, Squadron A Cavalry, New York City. Squadron A Cavalry reorganized for the World War as the 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. He was assigned to Company A.


He attended OTC, at Plattsburg Barracks, NY, commissioned, November 27, 1917, 1st Lieutentant, Infantry, and promoted Captain December 5, 1918. He was assigned to the 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division, at Fort Dix, NJ. He was sent across to Europe with the 311th Infantry, May 19, 1918. He saw combat in France and wounded in action ( gassed ), October 27, 1918. Returning to the States, May 22, 1919, and discharged from the service, May 30, 1919, Camp Merritt, NJ.
