At the age of 14 he went to sea as cabin boy in the Boston bark Daniel Webster, and followed the sea for many years, sailing in craft of every description. He was mate on the old coasting schooner Pyretis, which nearly 60 years ago brought the first cargo of coal ever delivered to this town. For many years he was engaged in fishing, and was a member of the crew of the Cuttyhunk lightship for several years.
