Joyce was born in Aquilla, Texas, to the late William "Bill" N. III and Blanche (Rainbolt) Wortham. She grew up After graduation she was employed with "the telephone company," as she always referred to it, and worked in Dallas, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Denver, Colorado. While living in Denver she married, a union that lasted 18 years and produced three children.
After retiring from Baylor Hospital, she built a home on a piece of the family land she had purchased many years previous. It was there that she lived out her days under the live oaks she loved, with her family and friends nearby, until she felt it was time to live with her daughter.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, William "Billy" N. Wortham III, and George Wortham; and sister, Wanda.
Survivors included her daughter, Cheryl Powell, of Justin; sons, Mark Brickhouse and wife, Patricia, of Waco, and Steve Brickhouse, of Laguna Park; step-daugthters, Karen Brickhouse and Erving Allison, of Virginia; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Tempest Neal and Nadine Prince; a brother, Ed Wortham and wife, Kathy; several other family members; and best friend since she was five, Alvena Prause Pocock.
