William W. Afflis, 48, former Delphi businessman, died suddenly Saturday at St. Luke’s hospital. Chicago, from peritonitis following an emergency appendectomy. His death was a shock to his many friends in this community where Mr. Afflis was well known.

Born in Reed City, Mich., he attended Duke University before coming to Delphi 18 years ago where he purchased the half interest of C. C. Pearson in the Adams and Pearson drug store. Selling his business about eight years ago, Mr. Afflis became associated with a national jewelry company and moved to Indianapolis. Previously he and his wife, Margaret A. Afflis, who is second district democratic vice chairman, had managed the auto license branch in Delphi.

At the time of his death, Mr. Afflis was supervisor of the National Optical company with headquarters in Chicago. He had recently spent a weekend in Delphi with his wife, who until a short time ago, was director of probation for the state of Indiana, and son, William, a high school student.

Mr. Afflis was a veteran of World War I and a member of Harry Bohannon Post No. 75 of the American, Legion; he was a member of the Shrine, a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Indianapolis Athletic Club.

Besides his wife and son, he leaves his mother, Mrs. Julia Afflis of Reed City, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Bettin of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Mrs. Gwendolyn Canfield, of Holly, Mich.; a brother, Carl Afflis of Nashua, New Hampshire.

Funeral services, including military rites at the graveside, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Grimm funeral home. Rev. Miles A. Freeman officiated, and burial was made in the Masonic cemetery.
