Alfred Pinkney was the first child born to Denacia (Slinkard) and Zachariah Crump. He had at least eight younger siblings John, Samuel, Nathan, Alexander, Mary, Melissa, Nancy and Zachariah.

Alfred married Sarah Lancaster and they had one child, John (b. 1862). After Sarah's death Alfred married Eliza Kinnison on June 12, 1866 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. They had at least eight children Andrew, Mary, Charity, Ada (b. about 1872), Dora, Lula (b. about 1877), Abner and Emma (b. 1884).

It is unclear how much schooling Alfred received, but he indicated in the 1900 Census that he could read and write. He worked as a farmer and day laborer.

Alfred served as a Private in the 2nd Regiment, Missouri Cavalry State Guard (1st Division) in the Confederate Army. He also served in Companies G and H, Regiment 56 in the Infantry. He enlisted in April of 1862, served 10 months and was discharged in 1863. It is unknown if Alfred supported slavery (although he did serve in the Confederate Army), but it is known that his father "owned" a Black man in 1850.

Alfred spent his teenage and adult years in Cape Girardeau County. He lived in Hubble, White Water, Kinder and Cape Girardeau. In 1890 Alfred had moved to Cowan in Wayne Country, by 1910 he and Eliza had moved to Billings, Montana where they spent the rest of their lives. They probably moved to be closer to family, as daughter Dora and son Abner were also living in Billings.
