James F. Cavanaugh Sr. was found dead in bed at his home, 1611 12th Ave. He was in the middle of his second 4 year term as Democratic mayor of Watervliet since 1968. He was married (Oct. 11, 1932) to the late Margaret M. Hayes. Surviving him are 4 sons, James F., Jr., Watervliet, Gerald J., Chespeake , VA, Brian T., Latham, and Michael J., Watervliet; 2 daughters, Mrs. Francis (Mary Ellen) Anastasi, Syracuse, Mrs. John (Margaret) Poulin, Watervliet; one brother Joseph Cavanaugh of Latham; one sister, Mrs. Frank Kreiger of Watervliet; 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mayor Cavanaugh was manager of the Machine Design Engineering Section at the Schenectady General Electric Co. plant until his retirement on Jan. 1, 1973. He was a lifelong resident of Watervliet and a graduate of LaSalle Institute. He attended the Evening Division at HVCC. He was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church and a member of its Holy Name Society, he was a member of various civic and fraternal organizations. Mayor Cavanaugh had served as president of the executive board of the Watervliet Civic Chest, Inc. He also was a scoutmaster and district commissioner of Troy Council, Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Watervliet Council, Watervliet Lodge of Elks, and the William F. Fennelly Memorial Division, AOH.

Throughout his years of service to the city of Watervliet he accomplished a great deal, including renovations at City Hall and police headquarters, construction of a new firehouse, the opening of the northern section of I-787 and improvements to the Youth and Senior Citizens centers. He was praised for his work as Chair of the Albany County Charter Commission.

Funeral was Mon., Nov. 19, beginning at Parker Brothers Memorial and continuing at St. Patrick’s Church.
