He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army. During WW II, he served in the European Theatre of Operations with the 13th Airborne Division, making combat jumps in Italy and Southern France. Following the war, he received his appointment as a Signal Officer in the Regular Army. He was also a veteran of Korea and Vietnam. Retiring after 22 years service in the Army, he worked at the Department of Buildings and Grounds for the state of South Carolina.
