Jesse was the son of British imports Lewis Shatford and Jeanette Cort, who married and then immigrated in 1880. The couple had twelve children. I found the names for six— Arthur G. (3 Sep 1881), Horace (9 Jun 1883), Jesse W. (28 Jan 1886), David Payson (20 Jun 1887), Chester L. (11 Dec 1889), and Salena J. (6 Jan 1892).

The lost 1890 Census would have been very helpful with regards to this family. When I found the family on the 1900 Census, they were living in West Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. Lewis Shatford, aged 46, was farming for a living. Jannett, aged 49, reported that she had had twelve children, but that only six had survived to that census. There with their parents were Arthur, aged 18, Horace (incorrectly noted as Forrest), aged 16, Jesse, aged 14, David, aged 12, Chester, aged 10, and Salena, aged 8.

Six years after that census, Jesse's brother Arthur married Mary Stanley on 1 Sep 1906 at the Stanley home in Argos, Marshall Co., Indiana. Sadly, their happiness was short lived. Two years after they wed, Arthur died on 18 Sep 1908, at age 27.

When the 1910 Census was taken, Lewis and Jannett were still living in Plymouth. Lewis, aged 56, was still actively farming. Jannett, aged 59, reported that only five of her twelve children were still living. Only two of the children were still living at home—Chester, aged 20, and Salena, aged 18. Jesse was not living with his family in 1910. I found a Jesse W. Shatford living in Penn Township, St. Joseph Co., one of two roomers with Warren Crooks and his son. Jesse, aged 24, had a job in a rubber factory, likely Uniroyal.

The year after that census, Jesse and two of his siblings married. Horace married wife Hazel Wells. Chester and Jesse got married in a double wedding ceremony on 2 Apr 1911 in Marshall County. Chester married Leona G. Reeder, and Jesse married Stella A. Keen.

On 6 Nov 1914, Jesse and Stella welcomed son Everett Dean. Sadly, a little over a year and a half later, they lost him on 10 Jun 1916.

On his 12 Sep 1918 WWI registration, Jesse, aged 32, reported his address as 123 W. La Porte St. in Plymouth, wife Stella noted as his next of kin. He was self-employed, the operator of his own shoe shop. He was noted as tall and slender with gray eyes and brown hair.

Two years later, the 1920 Census caught up with them living in Plymouth's Center Township. Jesse, aged 34, was still running a shoe shop. Stella, aged 31, was keeping house. No other children seem to have come along.

The 1930 Census found them at 907 Pearl St. in Plymouth. Jesse, aged 43, was noted as a dealer in leather. Stella, aged 41, was still by his side.

Three years after that census, Jesse's mother Jannett died on 6 Feb 1933. A year later, the family made another trip to the cemetery to bury Jesse's father Lewis Shatford who died on 30 Jan 1934.

Jesse and Stella were still at their Pearl St. address ten years later when the 1940 Census was taken. Jessie, aged 54, was by then the proprietor of a leather products business. Stella, aged 51, was keeping house.

On his 27 Apr 1942 WWII registration, Jesse, aged 56, reported that he was self-employed, and still residing on Pearl St. in Plymouth. Wife Stella was noted as his next of kin. He measured in at 6'2" and weighed in at 176 lbs.

Jesse and Stella shared forty seven years together before death parted them, first claiming Stella on 20 Feb 1959, aged 71. Jesse lived another nine years without her, passing into the light on 15 Aug 1968, aged 82.
