Valerie Ayers, 59, went to her eternal heavenly home on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11, 2008, after a courageous 9-month battle against pancreatic cancer. Val was an inspiration to those who were close to her in her illness - keeping a positive outlook, never complaining, and continuing to live her life to the fullest. Valerie was born and grew up in Santa Maria and graduated from Santa Maria High School in 1967. She met her true love, Mike Ayers, at Avila Beach and in 1969 they were married. Val and Mike made their home in San Luis Obispo on Pacific St., where they raised two daughters, Heather and Casey. In 1982 they moved to Los Osos and had their son Kevin.
Valerie had worked for San Luis Coastal Unified School District for 22 years as an elementary school secretary and was known and loved by faculty and students. Her bright smile made everyone feel welcome. Valerie will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Michael Ayers of Los Osos; children Heather Plastino of Santa Maria, Casey Amesse and Kevin Ayers, both of Los Osos; sister, Betty Reid of Los Osos; brother, Robert Kauffman of Nipomo; son-in-laws Todd Plastino and Marc Amesse; and six grandchildren Brandon, Gianna, Mia, Ellie, Ryan and Ava.
A celebration of Valerie's life will be held from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday, June 8, 2008, at the Jack House, 536 Marsh St. in San Luis Obispo.
Published in the San Luis Obispo Tribune, June 1, 2008.
