In the 1930s Arthur Tinker was a manager at Cross, Austin and Ireland lumber yard, a Bronx firm long associated with his mother's family. As such, he played a small role in the investigation of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. Lumber in the ladder used in the kidnapping was traced to several Bronx lumberyards, including Cross, Austin and Ireland. While an investigator was going through the company's receipts with Mr. Tinker two men -- "queer customers, in Mr. Tinker's estimation -- attempted to
pay for a 40-cent piece of plywood with a $10 bill. But when making change for the large bill proved problematic, they abruptly decided to pay with a smaller bill and left saying they would return for the wood. One of the two men, neither of whom returned for the wood, was later identified as the alleged kidnapper, carpenter Bruno Richard Hauptmann.
