Winifred was born on the 23rd of November 1914 in Melange, in Angola, also called Portugese West Africa, to American missionary parents, Rev Herbert Cook Withey and Ruth Bassett Withey.
She attended high school in Capetown, South Africa, before migrating to the United States in 1920.
Winifred studied art and drama in college, where she met and married fellow student, Marshal Lucas.
