PHYLLIS J. HANSON

Feb. 16, 1936, to Jan. 26, 2007

With sister Karen and daughter Diana at her side, Phyllis Hanson ended her long struggle with multiple sclerosis Friday morning, Jan. 26, 2007.

Born on Feb. 16, 1936, in Scobey, Mont., Phyllis Joanne Otto was the fourth of five children born to Ray and Elsie (Gunn) Otto of Minot, N.D.

Phyllis spent most of her school years in Lewistown and graduated from Bozeman's Gallatin County High School in 1954. During her high school years, Phyllis formed friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Phyllis married Dan Hanson in 1955. They had two children, Richard and Diana. Phyllis spent many busy years raising her children and worked as a bookkeeper for Marks and Hanson Masonry. Phyllis and Dan were divorced in 1980.

Phyllis had a quick sense of humor, a no-nonsense temperament, and was very generous to those in need.

Despite a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, Phyllis never wavered in her determination to continue to live on her own. During a long, frustrating and painful physical decline, and to her final day, Phyllis met life on her terms.

Nana deeply loved her grandchildren and enjoyed sharing her birthday with her grandson, Matthew. Throughout her life, Phyllis enjoyed her family and her friends, especially when they brought donuts or chocolate to the house.

Phyllis was an avid reader and a lifelong fan of the NFL. She enjoyed western movies, country music and sitting on her deck on warm summer nights reading the National Enquirer. She liked playing cards, especially on Saturday nights with her long-time friend Naida Marks. She also enjoyed coffee with friends, and she loved it when Bob Taylor would come around and cuss up a storm and tell her stories.

Phyllis liked to hear and tell stories about her brothers and sisters--the factual nature of some of those stories are disputed by her siblings.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Elsie; her dearly beloved son, Richard; her big brother, Wally; and her big sister, Joyce.

Phyllis is survived and missed by her brother Col. Lyle (Virginia) Otto, USAF (Ret.) of Gig Harbor, Wash.; her sister, Karen (niece, Kristi Dimke, of Cedar City, Iowa) Maika of Bozeman; her daughter, Diana (Dennis) Carlson of Bozeman; her grandchildren: Annique Fenlason of Bozeman, Matthew Carlson and Renee Carlson of Bozeman; and great-grandson, Kyle Fenlason of Bozeman, along with many nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends.

Viewing hours for Phyllis will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Chapel in Bozeman. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. A coffee and cookie reception will be held immediately after the service. Interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery on the Frontage Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Belgrade Meals on Wheels program, in care of the Belgrade Senior Center, 92 Cameron, Belgrade, MT 59714.
