She immigrated to the United States in 1904 from The Azores, Portugal, with their son Manuel, Jr. Manuel and his son worked in the Cotton Mills of Fall River. Maria took care of their seven children.
The last name of DeMotto, Motto was anglicized to Mattos.
Maria is survived by many grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Manuel remarried after the death of Maria in 1933. This may explain away some of the mystery as to why they are buried on opposite sides of the cemetery. Further family deatils are being investigated at this time.

The funeral of Mrs. Maria Mattos, wife of Manuel Mattos was held this morning from her late home, 1431 Rodman Street followed by services in the church of Our Lady of Health, where a high mass of requiem was celebrated by Rev. Arthur C. Reis. There were many floral tributes. Interment was in Notre Dame Cemetery. The bearers were Jose Paulino, Joaquim Vernude, David Cordeiro, Manuel Marks, Jose Gamache and Jose Correire. Mrs. Mattos died Saturday, January 14th and leaves behind her husband, one son, Manuel Mattos, Jr., six daughters Mrs Gloria Souza, Mrs. Dorothy Silvia, Mrs. Lena Souza, Miss Rose, Miss Josephine and Miss Evangelina Mattos. six grandchildren, one brother John Cordeiro and a sister Maria "Mary" Conceicao.
