ITHACA - George Wells Abbott, DVM, 87, died on Thursday, September 17, 2009.
He was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 27, 1922, the son of the late George L. Abbott and Annie Laurie (Wells) Abbott.
Dr. Abbott is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Dorothy (Donnelly) Abbott of Ithaca.
Dr. Abbott and his wife have been residents of Ithaca for the past 13 years and previously resided in Grafton, MA and Little Compton, RI. Dr. Abbott graduated from Worcester Academy in 1941 and received his BA degree from the College of Arts and Sciences from Cornell University and his D.V.M. degree from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. He was the President of his graduating class in 1945, was a member of the student council, played Varsity lacrosse and was a member of the freshman polo team.
He was the distinguished former President of the American Animal Hospital, President of the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association, the Director of Hospital Management for Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston, MA, the Nantucket Animal Hospital in Nantucket, MA and the Rowley Memorial Hospital in Springfield, MA. Dr. Abbott also served on the Board of Directors of the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He was a noted state, national and international lecturer on Surgical and Practice Management and an Adjunct Professor of Clinical Medicine at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. He served as a former President of the Cornell Veterinary Alumni Association from 2008 - 2009, former President for the Society for International Veterinary Symposia and was the Salmon Award recipient from Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Abbott was the owner of the Grafton Animal Hospital in Grafton, MA and Co-owner of the Abbott Animal Hospital in Worcester, MA with his brother, Dr. Richard Abbott.
He was also associated with the Pawtucket Animal Clinic in Pawtucket, RI and the Woodbridge Animal Hospital in Woodbridge, VA. He was a member of the Johnson Art Museum Council at Cornell University, the Presidents Council at Cornell University and on the Feline Council at Cornell Veterinary College. Dr. Abbott was an avid fisherman, hunter, skier, gardener and a loyal hockey and lacrosse fan.
George was the father of Karen L. Abbott of Manassas, VA, George W. Abbott, Jr. of Geneva, Dwight L. Abbott of Duxbury, MA, Robin M. A. Burwick of Millbury, MA and Kimberly T. Brown of Wayland, MA. Grandfather of Jeffrey W. Burwick, Kaitlin K. Burwick, Christopher L. Abbott, Courtney W. Abbott, Michaela E. Abbott, Alyssa P. Brown, Lindsay L. Brown, Anna-Jen Abbott and Amelia Abbott. Brother of Robert M. Abbott of Charlotte, NC and Dr. Richard J. Abbott of Moultonborough, NH. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Ithaca.
