Henry John Bauck was born 21 Jul 1877 on a farm in Gorman Township NW of Perham, Otter Tail County, Minnesota; son of Friedrich "Fred" Bauck Sr. and Dorothea Elisabeth Buhr. He attended school in the country near the farm. He helped around the farm as he was growing up. As a teenager, Henry traveled to Germany, probably with his mother and brother, Herman, in 1892. They traveled on the liner Kaiserin Maria Theresia. In the winters, he cut wood.

About 1894, Henry went into business with his brother, Fred. They operated a general store on Main Street in Perham. They rented the store space from Mike Daly, who owned the building.

Henry was united in marriage 01 Oct 1901 in Norman County, Minnesota with Emma Lillian Ruebke; daughter of Henry H. Ruebke and Marie Mary Cordes. They were the parents of 10 children:

1. Heinrich (Henry) Friedrich (1902-1903)
2. Reuben Robert born 1903 married Ada Crowther
3. Elmer Johann born 1904 married Aura Louise Lothrop
4. Maria Mathilde born 1906 married Hugh Duffin
5. Earl (1907-1908)
6. Verna Henrietta born 1909 married Robert "Bob" John Montgomery
7. Melvin Bernhard Herman born 1910 married Mary Agnes Doell
8. Dorothea Mildred born 1913 married Claude Ballinger Reese Jr.
9. Violet Regina born 1915 married/divorced Harry Horsfield
10. Henry Evans William born 1917 married #1 Edith Lillian Pemberton, #2 Jean Louise Duplessis

In 1903, Henry and Fred had built a new 50 x 125' brick building across the street from the general store in Perham. Shortly after they moved into the new quarters, the brother's partnership was dissolved with Henry taking over the general store and his brother Fred operating the hardware store. Brother -in-laws John and Henry Ruebke were also involved in the general store operation. After a few years, Henry got out of the business. Henry was also involved in other businesses such as the potato business and the bicycle shop.

Henry became interested in Canada when his cousin John Bauck and later his brother Bill had moved up there. Henry homesteaded 160 acres of land near Chaplin and built a shack type house and barn. In May of 1914 Henry and his family moved to Canada. Later, he discovered that the buildings were built on the wrong quarter of land and had to be moved. The house was later remodeled and enlarged. He bought another 160 acres.

Henry and wife Emma started with only a few acres under cultivation, but each year he broke additional land and gradually put more of his land under cultivation. He started with two horses but at one time he owned four horses and four oxen. The oxen seemed to work better for breaking new land. Henry went in for mixed farming, mostly cattle and grain such as wheat, oats, and barley.

During the depression in the early 30's Henry had to take out a government loan in order to stay on the farm. Later the government cancelled these debts. Henry stayed on the farm until 1948 when he moved into Chaplin and his son, Melvin took over operation of the farm.

Henry passed away 01 Nov 1952 in Chaplin, Saskatchewan, Canada at the age of 75 years. He was laid to rest in the Rosedale Cemetery in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Emma had a stroke and lived with daughters Marie and Verna until they couldn't take care of her. She passed away 18 Sep 1960 in Moose Jaw at the age of 82 years. She was laid to rest in the Rosedale Cemetery with Henry.
