Thomas Jefferson Patton was born in Tennessee, 4 May 1837. His parents were born in Tennessee and came into Missouri by covered wagon in search of farm land. He married Mary Elizabeth Robertson in 1855. In 1857, Thomas and his father in law, Wm. James Robertson purchased land at Ozawkie and settled on farms in the SE corner of Atchison county. Mr. Patton was known as a prominent Indian trader.
Thomas and Mary had 13 children. Five have preceded him in death. The surviving children are: A.C. (Clabe) Patton of Larkinburg; Mary Ann Casto and Nellie Casto of Centralia; Ambrose of California; Martha Dickens of Idaho; Addie, Alfred and John at the home.
Thomas Patton was an industrious pioneer and suffered many hardships in the early days of Kansas settlement. He died at the age of 48 years on 17 January 1885. He was buried in the Patton-Robertson family plot at the top of the hill overlooking Wild Cat Creek, the site of their first home.
