Loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and doctor to thousands, Glen Lee Berkenbile passed away September 18, 2017. He was born to Zelma Yrica Lee Berkenbile and Lawrence Wilburn Berkenbile July 25, 1922 in Keifer, Oklahoma. His siblings are Phyllis Berkenbile Taylor, deceased, Lawrence W. Berkenbile, Jr. and Freda Berkenbile Hobart. In 1944, he met his life love, Martha Annette Perot, and they were married February 3, 1945. Their marriage lasted 68 years until she passed in April 2013. Their three daughters and families are:, Suzi Fawthrop and son, Christopher and Chelsey Fawthrop, Sally Beckman married to Will with children Bill and Suzanne Beckman, and their children William, Evie and Alexander, Annette Barcum with children Aiden and Addison, and Lee and Desiree Beckman and Gemma. , Janis Ferguson, married to David have four children, Ladd and Emily Fritz, Marjorie and Zachary Guy and son Marshall, Christy Ferguson, and Martha and Will Owen.
Glen graduated High School in Bristow in 1940. He attended Oklahoma State University, putting himself through school and was accepted to OU Medical School his junior year, graduating 1946. His internship was at Walter Reed in Washington D.C. He served in the U.S. Army as a medical officer, then in 1950 served as a Captain in the Medical Corps, in the National Guard. He was in Family Practice in Purcell, Ok. He went on to specialize in surgery at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, later becoming a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. He set up private practice in General Surgery in Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1956 and was there until 1980 when they moved to Tulsa, practicing for five years at Glass Nelson Clinic. He retired at the age of 65 and returned to work at the age of 70 with great enthusiasm. He was appointed to the State Board of Health in 1968 and also served on the Maritime Advisory Board, bringing the USS Batfish submarine to Muskogee. He loved volunteering at Neighbor for Neighbor clinic and the Tulsa County Recycled Medication Program. He spent many years as an active member of Rotary Club. His membership in Wauhillau Outing Club was a favorite relaxation for him. He worked, loving doctoring and kept his medical credentials current until the age of 94.
The family fondly thanks Barbara Iverson for her love and companionship for him the last several years. The family is also extremely grateful to the many caretakers from MyChoice who took such loving care of him.
