During WWII, Lawrence enlisted 1 July 1941 (five months BEFORE Pearl Harbor) in the U.S. Army at Carlisle Barracks in Pennsylvania; honorably discharged 5 October 1946 at Camp Beale in California. In 1950 he received $500 WWII veteran's compensation.
His older brother, John Caspar Henderson Smith, a Navy lieutenant, was killed in action in the South Pacific in 1943. His body was never recovered.
Their father, John Harold Smith, was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWI: Appointed Lieutenant (Junior Grade) (Permanent) 7 March 1915; Lieutenant (Temporary) 1 July 1917; Lieutenant (Permanent) 7 March 1918; Lieutenant Commander (Temporary) 1 July 1918. Torpedo Officer on the "Rowan" 24 May 1916 to 23 Oct 1917; To duty on the "Maumee" 7 Nov 1917 to 12 Nov 1917; Treatment at Naval Hospital Philadelphia Pa to 2 Oct 1918; To duty Naval Academy Annapolis Medical Department 16 Oct 1918 to 13 Feb 1919. Retired 26 Feb 1919.
The boys had a younger sister, Virginia, born in 1928 or 1929 and named after her mother. The elder Virginia's parents were Moses H. Canan (1858–1935) & Fanny Anne Custer
(1856–1913).
