Irish Ecologist, Botanist, and Zoologist. He served as Emeritus Professor of Natural History at Edinburgh University in Scotland. Became a fellow of the British Royal Society in 1854, received a Royal medal in 1873, the Cunningham Medal of the Royal Irish Academy in 1878, and the Linnean Medal in 1896. He died around the age of 86.
