Merrilla graduated from Green Bay East High School in 1940. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, she graduated from Oshkosh State Teachers' College. On June 5, 1948, she married Robert L. Hannon at Annunciation Catholic Church, Green Bay. They were married 47 years. She went on to teach high school in Oconto Falls, Seymour, Pulaski before she married Robert, and then returned to the classroom in the late 1960's to teach at Our Lady of Charity in Green Bay.
Merrilla enjoyed politics and history. One of her fondest memories was seeing General Eisenhower return to Washington D.C. in the summer of 1944.
Merrilla had a variety of interests. She loved family camping trips and vacations traveling out west and out east to learn about the history of our country. Throughout her life, Merilla was active in the theater performing in high school, college, community theater, and church productions. She was also a Girl Scout leader, a member of the League of Women Voters, a member of the Belgian American Club, and a member of Learning in Retirement at UWGB.
Merrilla attended Nativity of our Lord Catholic Church where she grew in the faith she loved. Father Willard Van De Loo guided her on her spiritual journey. She was an active member of the parish serving as a lector, a religious education teacher, and as a member of the Worship and Education Commission. She continued to serve on parish committees until her 90th birthday.
Above all, Merrilla loved her family. She would happily share stories about children and grandchildren with anyone who would listen. She was proud of each of them and their accomplishments.
She is survived by six children: Julie Hannon (George Hazen), Kimberly, WI; Mary Chris Hannon (Jim Johnson), Madison, WI; Michael (Margaret) Hannon, Ashwaubenon, WI; Lisa (Curtis) Belau, Ripon, WI; Amy (Christopher) Hannon-Drew, Green Bay, WI; and Matthew Hannon, Fond du Lac, WI. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Derrick Wagner (Lynn Ann), Ryan Hazen (Keisha), Joseph (Julia) Hannon, Megan Hannon Visger (Jay), Nathan VandenHeuvel, Eric VandenHeuvel, Ashley Drew Vandersteen (Nick), and Sara Drew; and by three great-grandchildren, Rosalina and Hutton Wagner, and Esperanza Hazen.
