Enlisted, November 23, 1914, in Troop A, 1st Cavalry, NYNG, Brooklyn, NY. He mustered in with Troop A for service on the Mexican border, June 30, 1916. The 1st NY Cavalry was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas, as part of the 6th NY Division ( later to be the 27th Division ). The 1st NY Cavalry return to New York and mustered out of border service, March 20, 1916.

On March 30, 1917 ( ten days after being muster out from border service ) the 1st Squadron, 1st NY Cavalry ( which Troop A was part of )were mustered in for service to guard the New York City Aqueduct system. When was was declared his Troop was already in federal service.

World War 1, he entered the war with Troop A, 1st Cavalry, NYNG, the 1st Cavalry, NYNG, was reorganized for the World War as the 104th & 106th Machine Gun Battalions, 27h Division. Troop A was designated Company A, 104th Machine Gun Battalion. Company A was transferred to the 105th Machine Gun Battalion and designated Company D, 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division.

He was transferred to the Camp Jackson, ROTC, May 1, 1918, and shipped out for France, May 23, 1918, aboard the USS Chicago.
